A stepped plug looks deceptively simple: two cylinders, a shoulder, maybe a chamfer. But every face has its own surface geometry, wheel-to-surface angle, and finish requirement. The shoulder transition between faces is exactly where hand buffers either leave a ring mark or gouge the corner radius.
The LR-POLISH-B-SP is a closed-loop robotic buffing machine built around stepped plugs, shoulder bushings, valve-seat inserts and similar precision stepped-cylinder parts. It buffs the top face, OD barrel, shoulder step and chamfer in a single, programme-controlled cycle. Gloss-unit (GU) feedback closes the loop so every part leaves the cell at the same finish level, not dependent on operator performance.
Every recipe carries a gloss target (GU) set from your customer's finish specification. After each completed cycle, the inline sensor measures the actual GU on the top face and OD:
This closed-loop function makes the machine self-correct for wheel wear, ambient humidity, compound variation and incoming part condition without operator involvement.
The lathe-turned top face carries concentric tool spirals. Buffing these out requires the wheel path to cross the spiral pattern, not follow it. The LR-POLISH-B-SP uses a spiral-outward robot path combined with C-axis part rotation at a controlled, offset speed — so the wheel always sweeps across the toolmark direction rather than along it. The result is uniform, direction-free surface on the top face.
The stepped plug's OD and top-face datum often have tight tolerances (press-fit, sealing seat, mould guide). The cell's fixture design and force limit protect these surfaces:
Typical scenario includes 2 skilled buffers across 2 shifts dedicated to stepped-plug buffing.
| Driver | Mechanism |
|---|---|
| Direct Labour | 2 buffers replaced by 1 cell operator; night/weekend unmanned option |
| Rework Elimination | GU closed loop catches under-polished parts before plating/coating |
| Yield on Precision OD | Force-limited path prevents dimensional loss; eliminates scrapped plugs |
| Consumable Efficiency | Metered compound + wheel-wear compensation; no manual overloading |
| Traceability Premium | Automatic generation of per-part surface records for customer requirements |
